Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a 2000 year old system of Traditional Chinese Medicine whereby needles are placed in key acupuncture points on energy pathways (meridians) on the body to stimulate the immune system, natural healing and to provide pain relief. It has been shown to benefit 80% of treated pets, working especially well for musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis, sprains, or back pain. It is surprisingly pain-free, gentle, and very safe with no side effects and very few contra-indications.
Maeve has attended residential courses in acupuncture at Bristol University and has been integrating it in her everyday practices for several years. She also uses TSE (Transcutaneous Spinal Electroanalgesia) either alone or in conjunction with acupuncture to treat chronic pain.
Herbal Remedies
We stock a wide range of Dorwest Herbs. Maeve uses herbal treatments routinely in her work with pets, often integrated with conventional medicine for a more natural, safe and effective approach to disease.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy, a system of medicine, has been practiced on both man and animals for over 250 years. Its basis is to use "like to treat like", in contrast to conventional western medicine, where the "opposite" is used; for example anti-inflammatory. Homeopathic remedies are derived from animals (e.g. bee sting venom), plants (e.g. Arnica flower) or minerals (e.g. sulphur), and work by stimulating a reaction within the animal to bring about an immune response which leads on to the animal fighting off its disease and healing itself.
Homeopathic remedies are very safe, if given correctly, and can be used in very young, old, or pregnant pets. Remedies are very easy to give, and relatively inexpensive compared to conventional drugs. Homeopathic treatment of pets is becoming very popular and mainstream, not only due to the above benefits, but as a result of increased awareness of problems with conventional medicines, such as antibiotic resistance, side effects and drug interactions.
